High Myopia Surgery

For those cases in which laser correction of refractive defects is not indicated, there are other alternative techniques: refractive surgery with phakic lens implantation and refractive lensectomy with intraocular lens implantation.

Surgery with phakic lens implant

The implantation of a phakic lens (usually posterior chamber, ICL® type), arises as an alternative to the excimer laser, for those patients – of non-presbyopic age – who, due to the characteristics of their eye, cannot be operated with this technique. It consists of inserting, in the anterior pole of the eye, a lens made of synthetic material, specially designed for the correction of the refractive defect.

The procedure, performed by our ophthalmic surgeons, requires preparation with eye drops during the three days prior to surgery. The anesthesia used is usually topical (drops). The phakic lens, special and unique for each patient, is introduced in a simple procedure that takes only a few minutes and does not require stitches or occlusion (the patient can go home without the need to cover the eye).

The personalized follow-up, carried out by the clinic’s medical team, will allow the patient’s evolution to be monitored. Subsequent postoperative revisions will be performed in the following approximate time frames:

  • At 24 hours.

  • A week.

  • Per month.

  • At three months and on a regular basis until discharge.

Clínica Ocular Dr Tirado has a long trajectory in this type of phakic lens implants, more than a decade, and a high volume of patients operated.

Surgery with refractive lensectomy and introacular lens implantation

Refractive lensectomy is another technique for the correction of refractive defects, an alternative to the excimer laser. Primarily indicated for patients of presbyopic age (and even younger or pre-presbyopic, in specific cases) who may not be optimal candidates for laser treatment.   It consists of undoing and removing the crystalline lens from inside the eyeball, by means of ultrasound (phacoemulsification), and replacing it with an artificial one. Once this is done, it is replaced by an artificial lens (made of compatible material, acrylic or other similar materials).

Performed by our ophthalmologists, the procedure requires preparation with eye drops during the three days prior to surgery. The anesthesia used is usually topical (drops). The artificial lens is inserted in a simple procedure that takes only a few minutes and does not usually require stitches or occlusion.

The follow-up is performed by the medical team of Clínica Ocular dr Tirado, allowing to control the evolution, in the successive postoperative revisions in the following approximate terms:

  • At 24 hours.

  • A week.

  • Per month.

  • At three months and on a regular basis until discharge.

Clínica Ocular Dr Tirado has an extensive experience in this type of intraocular lens implants, and a high volume of patients operated, being pioneers in this technique since 1994.
